Shame on You and Me [chapter 2]

Shame on You and Me
Chapter 2
Breann Wathen

“Hey Chels!” I strutted through the door.
“Hey Ambs! Hey Nate!” She waved from the dance floor. She had gone all out for her 25th birthday. There was this huge lighted dance floor (it was were everyone was at), this bulky machine blowing out countless bubbles, and a huge buffet table.
“I’m heading over to that table, want anything?” I looked at Nathan. I could see he was still kinda pissed at me.
“Nah, two sticks of gum did it for me.”
“Sayonara.” I turned around and headed for the buffet, but Angela blocked my way.
“Hey girlie! I have not seen you since our trip to New Orleans! Where have you been?” She had this huge piece of lettuce in her teeth.
“Nothing much. Plus you got something right there.” I pointed to the lettuce.
“Oh lord. I’m sorry; the chef salad over there is bomb.” She picked it out while staring at me and it made me mad for some reason.
“Well, I guess I’ll grab a small serving.”
“Yeah, go do that. See you on the dance floor?”
“Opposite of no.” I was inching away slowly.
“AH! I love you girl!” Angela put her hand on my shoulder and then walked off. That is the reason she cannot hold a relationship with anyone, too touchy. I got over the buffet table and it was heaven. Buffalo wings, those little ham sandwiches and cookies. I literally ate everything off that table. I walked back over to a table and pigged out. Out the corner of my eye, I saw Chelsea walking near my way. I had just enough time to wipe my hands and eat like a ’lady’.
“Hey Amber! Sorry if my greeting was kinda rude, that music was calling me.” She sat down and wiped her sweat on her super cute jean shorts.
“No problem. Happy birthday though. I might have to leave soon.”
“Why? You just got here. Enjoy all this stuff I paid for.” She began to laugh.
“Nathan is kinda mad at me so he won’t last long.”
“You car is still in the shop? Ridiculous. “
“Agreed.” I rolled my eyes. Chelsea rose from her chair, stretching tall.
“Well I’ll be over there if you need anything.” I took my plate over to the trash. Nathan was walking over to me.

“Can we leave soon? Nothing’s going on.” Nathan was scoping out the dance floor.
“Why can’t I enjoy my best friend’s birthday party?”
“Why couldn’t I stay at Scott’s house?”
“We were there for 5 hours Nate!”
“Well, catch a ride with someone because I’m heading back home.” He leaned in for a goodbye kiss.
“Don’t even try that. Bye.” I pushed him back and walked off. Why is he acting like an asshole? Seriously, I didn’t want to be at Scott’s but I just had to deal with it. Whatever.
I started on my way to the dance floor, doing some weird shimmying move.
“I LOVE THIS SONG!” One of her co-workers was in the middle, jerking her body quickly to the tempo. I was kinda weirded out, but there was a peculiar taste to that punch.
‘Imma Be’ started playing and I couldn’t help myself. While dancing in my own world, someone bumped into me.
“Sor-Amber?” It was Ian.
“Hey! How do you know Chelsea?” I was still shaking my shoulders.
“We’ve been friends since daycare years. I’m surprised I was in her contacts.”
“Wow. Our 7th grade gym teacher made us have a relay race against one another. I won.” I raised the roof.
“Oh really, you don’t seem like the athletic type.” He pinched my arm.
“Remember that it was like 12 years ago.” I giggled, like a flirty giggle and I meant it.
“Well, keep shaking your body. See ya Monday?”
“Sure, yeah. Later.” I waved while he was walking away. I know I shouldn’t say this, but Ian has a tight body. I mean, he looks lanky but I know there is something going on under that grey v-neck he was wearing. And I have the urge to find out. I shook my head, erasing all of the dirty thoughts and then prayed to God that he wouldn’t throw me in a pit of lava or something.
“Amber! Shake your ass over here girl!” Chelsea was dancing, her cup high in the air. I maneuvered through the thick crowd and got next to her.
“You didn’t tell me you knew Ian.”
“Oh him? He was just a childhood friend. Hadn’t seen him in some years. I just wanted all my good people here to live it up with me tonight.” I take a long sip from her cup and raises back up again.
“I’m gonna head over to the bar.” I slid through the crowd again and saw Ian standing at the bar.

“I’ll take a…Budweiser ‘muh man.” I eased right next to him.
“Budweiser? Classy choice.”
“Yeah, I’m the designated driver. I don’t need to get too wasted.”
“Same here. Drinking too much just causes problems. A Sprite please.”
The bartender nodded at us and grabbed he two drinks from the cold fridge. Ian grabbed them both and gave the man a 3-dollar tip. He led me to a table far away from the whole party scene.
“Why so far away?” We were under this little gazebo covered in Christmas lights.
“Meh, too much noise. I just really want to talk to you Amber.” Ian hands me my drink. I open the can and let the carbonation fill my nostrils, making my eyes water.
“You alright?” Ian puts his hand on my shoulder. I quickly react by getting up and moving outside the gazebo.
“I’m fine, just need some fresh air.” Wasn’t that a terrible lie. The truth is that I want him, I like him too much.

If only Nathan and I could set up a guilt free pass thingy for a week. I’d go to a luxurious beach with Ian. Seeing his 8-pack glisten in the sun as I rub sun-tanning lotion on him He would take a flower and place it in my nice soft beach waved hair. We could walk across the ocean without a care in the world. Best. Vacay. Ever.

“Amber? I’m sorry. I really am. I’ve been too ongoing with you lately because, I kinda have feelings for you.” Ian turns me towards him. I can’t help but stare into those big crystal blue eyes. I try my hardest but I can’t.
“Amber, you’re amazing. I know you love Nathan and all but I just feel better knowing that you know what I’ve needed to tell you.” Wait, what did he just say?
“Ian, wow. Umm.” I can’t find any words to reply with. His hands are still on my shoulders, slowing moving down to my middle back.
“Our drinks! Yeah. Your beer is gonna be hot and my Sprite will go flat. I’ll just go over here for a second.” Damn it Amber. Why do you have to be so awkward? I rushed back to the gazebo, mind racing, and my heart won’t stop beating so quickly. I know me and Nathan have our fights but I can’t let this happen. I gulp the last two drops of soda and starting walking towards for the parking lot.

“Amber, wait! I thought your car was in the shop? Here, I’ll give you a ride home.” Ian grabs for my shoulder again but I jerk it back quickly.
“No thanks Ian. Look, it’s been a great night but I just need to get home, by myself.” I head to the parking lot.

“Amber, I’m sorry if I made you feel weird and I understand if you don’t’ feel that way about me. Nate’s a real cool guy.” You don’t understand Ian. I can never tell you how I feel. Soon you’ll find another girl to chase after, knowing she feels the same way about you. And Nate’s not a cool guy; he’s hiding something from me. I know it. I want you Ian. You and only you. If I could only speak my mind, instead I run headed for the street, finding the next bus that’ll take me close enough to home.
I can hear Ian's footsteps crunching through the dry brittle grass. The bus pulls up and I drop in the change. The bus lights illuminate Ian’s face. The saddest expressions I have ever seen. I find the nearest seat wait patiently. I hope that this night ends soon.
